Today's Graduate Student Action Committee spanned three full hours, two of which were spent with faculty discussing a paper I hadn't had time to read and on a subject in which I have no interest. The last hour, though, included free pizza and a professor-free atmosphere in which we discussed all kinds of fascinating things, from exam transparency to TA stipend increases.
We talked a little about how students should feel under more pressure to attend all events. I disagree. I think each person must strike his or her balance, but understand what important opportunities are missed by not attending meetings. Like the opportunity to grill people who've been there before, and the opportunity to develop a casual relationship with people you'll need to ask to be on your committee.
Do it. Go. If you've the courage for it, ask questions. Pay attention to the answers.
And give yourself permission to miss, too. Finish your bibliography instead. Or do the laundry.
